NEWARK, Del. – "True leaders don't create more followers, they create more leaders."
For the University of Delaware women's soccer program, it's clear that there are four principles: humble, hungry, hard-working & high energy and those principles are the pillars for what the Blue Hens stand for, both on and off the field.
To lead the way this upcoming fall, the Blue Hens named seniors Jessica Kennett, Jill Vassallo and Dani Kabat, along with juniors Gabby Johnson and Olivia Schuck as the captains for the 2019 season.
"Great culture requires a shared vision, reinforced by strong leadership. We are so fortunate to have a core group in Jess, Jill, Dani, Gabby and Liv, who exemplify our key characteristics; Humble, Hungry, Hard-Working & High Energy," Head Coach Mike Barroquiero said. "There's no doubt that each of these young ladies make us better both on and off the field. I'm so proud to have them step into leadership roles this fall!"
It is an honor and privilege that the five captains don't take for granted.
"It's a privilege to be named captain of this team after being part of the growth we've experienced over my time here. To lead a group of such dedicated teammates and friends, who are committed to the same goal is an honor. I'm extremely excited and eager to see where this season takes us." –Jessica Kennett
"Being a captain isn't about the C on the jersey. I believe it's embodying the values and goals of the team and displaying them on and off the field. It has been very easy to lead this team due to each player's commitments and dedication to one another." – Dani Kabat
"I'm so honored to be a captain this season. I'm humbled each and everyday by the work ethic and determination of our team. Our team is my motivation to give my best as a leader, teammate and friend, both on and off the field." – Gabby Johnson
"It's such an honor to be a captain of this program. I've watched us grow from the group up and it means so much to me to be able to lead and set the tone for this great and hard-working group of girls." – Jill Vassallo
"Every girl on this team deserves the position of captain in their own special way. With that in mind, I feel honored to be able to lead this group of girls along with my other four teammates. Throughout each drill, each practice, each game, this team gives their utmost effort, and I strive to give them the same in return throughout my own play and leadership." – Olivia Schuck
