BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Anyone who has been around the University of Delaware women's soccer team this summer saw first-hand that this team was hungry.
That was on display in the Blue Hens' season opener on Friday night. Behind a career night from senior Alexis Montgomery and a strong defensive effort, Delaware took down perennial Patriot League power Lehigh, 2-0.
It's Delaware's first win in a season opener since 2015.
Montgomery, who has battled injuries her whole career, tallied her first two goals of her career, one In each half to lead the offensive attack.
Defensively, the Blue Hens allowed just two first half shots and pressured the Mountain Hawks all night long to produce a clean sheet.
What They're Saying
"We knew that playing on the road against a great Patriot League side was going to be a tough test to start the season. In the end, there are so many ways to win games and although a bit ugly at times, I'm proud of how our girls battled for 90 minutes. We are growing in so many ways, it's really exciting to see." – Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro
"I'd be remiss if I didn't mention how incredible it is to see Monty on the field again and making this kind of impact. For a kid to battle back from years of injuries and score two great goals, it's a true success story. She embodies the heart this team has and I'm so proud of her." – Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro
"Not every win is pretty. Tonight, we grinded as a team through the highs and lows and pulled out a tough win that we truly deserved. We came into the game knowing the work we would have to put in and everyone contributed. My night was definitely an emotional one. After battling two compartment syndrome surgeries, being back on the field with my teammates is truly an unbelievable feeling. The two goals scored tonight are dedicated to my teammates who have been my supporters through it all and all I thought about was putting it in the back of the net for them." – senior Alexis Montgomery
"Winning isn't easy and often comes down to the work off the ball. This team defended with discipline and heart. I couldn't be prouder of the work the team put in tonight. It's truly a great start to the season." – senior captain Jessica Kennett
