EASTON, Pa. – This year is different.
Through just two games, the University of Delaware women's soccer team has made one thing clear: this year is different.
Playing a man down for 80 minutes on Sunday, the Blue Hens dominated play en route to a 2-0 road victory over Lafayette to improve to 2-0 on the year. It's the first time in 11 years that Delaware started the season with back-to-back shutout victories.
Senior Jessica Kennett and freshman Claudia Benz tallied the goals on the afternoon, with Kennett adding an assist on Benz's goal in the second half. Sophomore Kamryn Stablein notched nine saves and her second straight shutout.
Delaware's Maria Gentile was delivered a red card just 10 minutes into the game, forcing the Blue Hens to play a man down the rest of the way.
In the 30thminute, junior Riley Dixon was pulled down just inside the box to draw a penalty kick, which Kennett blistered home for a 1-0 lead. Half through the second half, Kennett took a free kick from just over the midfield line to the foot of Elizabeth Weimer, who found a cutting Benz for her first collegiate goal and a 2-0 victory.
Delaware's defense did the rest, holding the Leopards to just four second half shots, only one of which was on target.
What They're Saying
"The only word I can really say is proud. This team loves playing for each other. That was evident by the way we fought against two tough Patriot League opponents. Today, we started sluggish, but when Maria went out, we rallied. They never quit and just kept trusting all of their work that they had put in. This team is learning how to win and I can't express how proud I am to be their coach." – Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro
"At first, I was really frustrated with myself. However, seeing my teammates fight with a man down til the last whistle was overwhelming for me. The support of my teammates and coaching staff is like no other and I could not be prouder of the product we put out today on the field to get our second win and shutout of the year." – Junior Maria Gentile
"It's really incredible to come in as a new member of this team and be a part of the change and progress we are making. My teammates and coaches have done a tremendous job helping me feel apart of something bigger. Each and every player plays a role on this team. We all play the sport for one another. We're 2-0 and on the road to great success! I'm so happy to be a part of my new family." – Freshman Claudia Benz
