Blue Hens Battle Stony Brook To The Wire In 2-1 Loss
8/30/2019 10:03:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NEWARK, Del. – On a near perfect night at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium, a tough, physical soccer match broke out.
The University of Delaware women's soccer team battled its counterparts, Stony Brook, to the final whistle, but fell just short, 2-1, in the home opener for the Blue Hens.
Dating back to last year, the Blue Hens have now played 12 one-goal games in the past 20 contests.
For the second straight game, freshman Claudia Benz was the recipient of a beautiful feed from senior Jessica Kennett to give Delaware a 1-0 lead in the 15thminute.
Stony Brook would answer less than five minutes later after a scramble in front of Delaware's goal to tie the game at 1-1.
Just two minutes into halftime, the Seawolves would take the lead, 2-1.
Delaware would not quit. The Blue Hens just kept coming with near chances for both Anna Diffendal and Elizabeth Weimer late in the second half.
SBU would hang out for the tough 2-1 victory.

"This was a tough one tonight. I thought we battled and competed for sure and definitely played well enough to earn a result, but in games as tight as this one, every detail matters. That being said, I think this can be a wonderful learning experience for us. Good teams embrace the adversity and learn how to respond. Excited to see this team take another step forward." – Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro
