RICHMOND, Va. – With the 2019 campaign quickly approaching, the Colonial Athletic Association released its preseason poll and preseason All-CAA honors.
The Blue Hens, who are slated to finish second in the league, had four student-athletes recognized as determined by the conference's seven head coaches.
Lotte de Koning, the reigning CAA Player of the Year, was joined by Sydney Rhodes on the Preseason All-CAA Team while Sophie Giezeman and Emily Kresho earned Honorable Mention accolades.
De Koning, who was the first CAA player to be named the league's Rookie of the Year (2017) and Player of the Year (2018) since 1998, earned All-Region honors a year ago and finished with 25 points and 10 goals.
An All-CAA First Team selection and the conference's top goalie last year, Rhodes returns to the cage following a season where she collected nine wins, 61 saves and a 1.75 Goals Against Average.
A back for the Hens, Kresho was an All-CAA Second Team pick in 2018 after starting all 20 games as a sophomore.
Giezeman, the younger sister of former Delaware standout Lisa Giezeman, joins the Blue Hens in 2019 after spending her freshman and sophomore seasons at Maryland.
William & Mary, the 2018 CAA Champion, was selected to repeat atop the league standings by receiving five first-place votes for a total of 35 points while Delaware grabbed two first-place votes and 32 points. James Madison edged Northeastern to rank third with 24 points while the Huskies collected 23 points. Drexel (16), Hofstra (10) and Towson (7) rounded out the preseason poll.
The Blue Hens open the 2019 season at home Friday with a 2 p.m. contest against Albany.
The 2019 CAA Field Hockey Championship is slated to take place on November 8 and 10 at Fred P. Rullo Stadium.
