Nieves Leads Blue Hens to Third Place Finish at Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate

VERONA, N.Y. – Roberto Nieves tied for fourth place with a sizzling seven under par while Delaware tied for third place in the team standings during an impressive performance at the season-opening Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate.
After carding a pair of 70 rounds on Sunday, Nieves fired a three under par 69 on Monday on the par 72, 6,803-yard Kaluhyat Course at Turning Stone Casino Resort, finishing with a seven under par 209. Nieves' score is three shots from the UD three-round record of 206 set by Justin Martinson in 2005. Nieves recorded six birdies during his final round, including three in a four-hole stretch from the fifth through the eighth holes.
The Blue Hens, who posted 304 and 291 scores on Sunday, fired a 296 on Monday to tie for third place out of 14 squads with an 891 total. North Carolina easily captured the team crown at 822, tournament host Missouri placed second at 857, and the Blue Hens and Boston College tied for third.
Jack Melville carded an even par 72 on Monday to finish in 15th place with a four over par 75-73-72-220, while Matt Pulgini also fired an even par during his final round to tie for 16th place at six over par 80-70-72-222.
RJ Wren finished in 38th place at the invitational with a 12 over par 76-76-76-228, Hugo Kedzlie tied for 41st place with a 14 over par 77-77-76-230, and Michal Bargenda tied for 41st place with a 14 over par 76-72-82-230.
Playing as individuals along with Nieves, William Mirams (74-83-76-233) tied for 51st place, Cole Alibozek (86-78-76-240) tied for 68th place, and Ryan Pongrac (82-82-83-247) tied for 79th place.
Ryan Burnett of North Carolina carded an 18 under par to claim medalist honors, while his teammate Austin Greaser finished seven shots back.
Delaware is scheduled to return to action on Sept. 8-10 when the Blue Hens compete in the Golfweek Program Challenge in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
