RICHMOND, Va. – After the opening weekend of the NCAA volleyball season, Delaware's fast start was noticed in the first edition of the Colonial Athletic Association's weekly awards Monday as senior Maria Bellinger was named the conference's Player of the Week, while freshman Lani Mason was tabbed Rookie of the Week.
Â
A first-team selection a season ago and Preseason All-CAA honoree prior to the season, Bellinger was dominant all weekend, opening the season with a 19-kill performance against Big 12 foe West Virginia. She followed that with a pair of efficient performances in three-set matches, including a double-double in the Delaware Classic finale with 17 kills and 13 digs.
Â
Bellinger is in her familiar spot, atop the CAA in kills per set after the opening weekend at 4.40 a frame. The Paramus, New Jersey native's earned a nod to the Delaware Classic All-Tournament Team and this is her third selection as CAA Offensive Player of the Week.
Â
Mason hit .308 in the opening weekend, including a double-double in the three matches. In her first collegiate match, she put home 16 kills and had 16 kills against West Virginia.
Â
She ranks fourth in the conference after the opening weekend with 37 digs and it was the most kills by a UD freshman since Bellinger had 21 in her freshman season, four years ago. She was also named to the all-tournament team.
Â
The Blue Hens return to action when they travel to Baltimore for the UMBC Tournament, where they take on the host school Saturday after matching up with George Mason and Saint Francis Friday.
