MERION STATION, Pa. – The No. 15 Hawks jumped out to an early lead Friday afternoon and the No. 10 Blue Hens were unable to recover en route to a 4-2 loss at Ellen Ryan Field.
With a shutout on the horizon, Delaware freshmen Kate Gourley and Ashlyn Carr registered goals to put the Hens on board.
Gourley logged her first career goal in the 55th minute off an assist from junior Sophie Giezeman while Carr tallied her second career goal in the 58th minute with an assist from junior Femke Strien.
Unfortunately, it was too little too late as UD picked up its first loss of the season to move to 5-1 overall.
Redshirt senior Sydney Rhodes collected four saves against SJU, including the 100th of her career in the first quarter.
POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Rolf van de Kerkhof
"Congrats to Saint Joseph's, they were our toughest opponent to date. Overall, I thought we played very well and out of 60 minutes, we had 50 good minutes. They exposed us for the few weaknesses that we displayed, so kudos to them. This is a game we have to have early in the season that we can reflect on. Even though we didn't win, we can take joy in the moments we did do well. We showed outstanding fight to get back into the game."
