ELKTON, Md. – The Blue Hens men's tennis team kicked off its spring slate Sunday afternoon with a 4-3 loss to Richmond at Elkton Indoor Tennis.
The Spiders picked up the doubles point before Delaware sophomore James Wilkinson topped Matt Fernandez, 7-5, 6-1, in No. 1 singles. Fellow sopohomore Luis Molina followed with a 7-6 (0), 6-4 victory over Klein Evans in the second flight.
Junior Justice Jones also collected a victory by defeating Ricky Bell in No. 5 singles, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 10-4.
POST-MATCH QUOTES
Head Coach Pablo Montana
"We came up a little short today, but I am very pleased with our overall mindset. We were a point away from clinching the doubles tie, but we went for our shots and played aggressively. In singles, we immediately bounced back with back-to-back solid wins. We battled back and forth on all six courts. Richmond played a little more solid than we did in some places, but I'm proud of my guys for "running to the roar" and embracing the challenge. I am confident we are going to have a good season with this group of guys who are willing to grow and learn. We will take what we learned today and apply it tomorrow against a good Bucknell team."
