NEWARK, Del. – Five victories, two ECAC qualifiers and one school record highlighted a weekend that saw the University of Delaware track & field compete in three meets in three states in a two-day span.
The Blue Hens had four student-athletes at the Patriot Games at George Mason University on Friday, one at the Dr. Sander Challenge at the Armory NYC on Saturday afternoon and the rest of the team at the Frank Gulden Invitational at Bucknell on Saturday.
Senior Michaela Meyer set a new school record in the 800m at the Dr. Sander Challenge, while redshirt junior Mackenzie Jones (mile), sophomores Halima Scott (60m) and Halimah Roberson (triple jump), along with the 4x400 and 4x800 relay all took home titles at the Gulden Invitational.
"We had student-athletes at many venues this weekend and I thought we had a really good weekend as a team. There were a lot of positive results and things to build on at each meet," head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith said. "I'm very pleased with how this group is working and the efforts and accomplishments we've piled up at this point in the season. We're looking forward to continuing to build on what we've done so far."
Meyer added to her growing legacy with the Blue Hens, setting a school record in the 800m with a blistering time of 2:07.26, smashing the previous record by over two seconds. Even more impressive was the fact that her previous indoor best in the 800 was 2:13.46, making her record setting time an improvement by over six seconds.
Jones picked up a win for the third straight weekend in her third different event. This time she clocked in at 5:04.92 to win the mile, just ahead of her teammate Roxanne Ramirez (5:08.67), who finished fourth in the event.
Not only did Scott pick up two wins on the day, she nabbed her third ECAC qualifier of the indoor season, winning the 60m in 7.72 to go with her 200m and 400m qualifying times at the Great Dane Classic earlier this month.
Scott was also a part of the 4x400 relay, along with Alyssa Armor, Nailah Jackson and Roshelle Leaks that took the top spot with a time of 3:58.01.
Roberson claimed her first victory of the 2020 season, taking home the spot top in the triple jump with a leap of 38' ¼", with teammates Whitney Bailey-Hicks and Biola Adeleye also grabbing spots in the top-10.
Delaware's final victory of the weekend came in the 4x800 with the team of Jessica Harding, Jessica Stratton, Sydni Stovall and Tina Capparell clocked in at 9:15.62 to not only win the event, but also earn an ECAC qualifying time.
The Blue Hens had three top-five performances in the throws, highlighted by a second and third place finish by Bethany Clement and Myrissa McFolling-Young in the weight throw.
