RICHMOND, Va. – With her senior season quickly approaching, Delaware midfielder Mia DeRuggiero was named Thursday to the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Lacrosse Preseason Team.
Additionally, the Blue Hens were selected to finish fourth in the league standings in a vote by the conference's head coaches.
A perennial All-CAA honoree, DeRuggiero was a First Team selection in 2019 while also earning All-ECAC Second Team accolades as a junior. The Baltimore, Md. native broke Delaware's 35-year-old school record for single-season assists (53) a year ago and posted the most points (73) for the Hens since 1994.
DeRuggiero, one of Delaware's four team captains, has played in every game for the Blue Hens during her career. She is the team's active career leader with 131 points and 97 assists and holds three of the top four spots in UD single-game history for assists. Her 97 assists are good for second all-time in school history since Tewaaraton Legend Karen Emas finished her four-year career with 110 in 1984.
The three-time defending league champion and 2018 National Champion James Madison Dukes were picked to finish atop the CAA standings in 2020 by earning five first place votes and a total of 35 points. Last season's conference championship runner-up, Hofstra, collected two first place votes and 31 points to finish in second.
Towson was slated third with 26 points while UD collected 18 points for fourth. Drexel (14), Elon (14) and William & Mary (9) rounding out the standings in fifth and seventh places, respectively.
Delaware kicks off the 2020 campaign, the first under head coach Amy Altig, by traveling to Rutgers for a noon draw on Saturday, February 15. The Hens will take on two other road opponents in George Mason (Feb. 19) and Georgetown (Feb. 29) before hosting Duquesne in the home opener on March 4.
