The 1990 Blue Hen women's cross country team opened its season with a win at the Delaware Invitational and rode that momentum throughout the season before capturing the program's first ever East Coast Conference Championship at the end of October.
UD, under the direction of head coach Sue McGrath-Powell, defeated six other schools in the season-opening meet at Carpenter State Park on Sept. 15, before finishing in second place at the UMBC Invitational the following week.
The Blue Hens then traveled to Bethlehem, Pa. to post dual meet victories over Lehigh, Navy, Colgate, SUNY-Binghamton, Columbia and SUNY-Albany.
Following a 23rd place finish at the Paul Short Invitational, Delaware posted consecutive fourth place finishes at the Billy Harris Run and Gettysburg Invitational.
The ECC meet was held on Oct. 27 in New Britain, Conn., with Delaware easily capturing the team title by placing seven runners among the top 10 to record just 21 total points. Central Connecticut finished a distant second with 56 points, followed by Towson State with 78, UMBC with 87 and Hofstra with 147.
The Hens were paced by junior Amy Oppermann, who won the 3.1-mile race with a time of 18:53, while Jill Riblett finished second in 19:19 and Belynda Dunn came in third with a 19:24 pace.
UD teammates Ellen Strickler (19:43), Jennifer Wiest (19:44), Karin Skoglund (19:48) and Jacqui Tweed (19:55) finished seventh through 10th, respectively.
Oppermann, who led the Blue Hens in six of the seven meets during the year, captured her first ECC individual title. She then finished in 18th place at the season-ending ECAC Championships, as UD placed an impressive seventh out of 24 squads.
