The 2010 University of Delaware volleyball team won the Colonial Athletic Association championship in one of the best seasons in program history.
The Blue Hens collected a 26-6 overall record, including 13-1 in CAA play, and a spotless 15-0 mark in home matches. From Oct. 3 through a 3-2 win over Northeastern in the CAA championship match on Nov. 21, Delaware won a program-record-tying 14 straight matches. The conference title came during a stretch where the Blue Hens won four out of five CAA championships from 2007-2011.
Delaware was an outstanding defensive team, led primarily by the CAA Defensive Specialist of the Year Greta Gibboney. Gibboney, a team captain, recorded 654 digs in 2010, the fifth-highest single-season total in program history since 1984. The libero from Huntingdon, Pa., was named to the All-CAA First Team and the AVCA East All-Region First Team.
Jess Chason, Delaware's other team captain, was the CAA Setter of the Year after racking up 1,224 assists, the ninth most in one year in school history since 1985. Chason also earned First Team All-CAA recognition and was named a Team Co-MVP alongside Gibboney.
Middle hitter Paige Erickson anchored the defense on the front line, recording 145 blocks on her way to Third Team All-CAA honors. In a 3-1 win over Towson on Sept. 24, she racked up 14 blocks, the second-highest single-game total in school history. Her 145 blocks in 2010 rank sixth best at Delaware since 1984.
Delaware also had a balanced and powerful attack, with four players each spiking 250 or more kills. Outside hitter Kate Dennehy, the CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player and a First Team All-CAA selection, led the squad with 394 kills. Outside hitter Alissa Alker provided 369 kills and made the All-CAA Third Team. Kim Stewart added 302 kills, while Erickson chipped in 258.
The Blue Hens picked up some big wins in non-conference play, sweeping Rutgers 3-0 on Sept. 4 and beating Notre Dame on the road on Sept. 17. After dropping the conference opener at Georgia State in five sets, Delaware went on a 14-match win streak to claim the CAA regular season crown.
Hosting the CAA tournament at the Carpenter Sports Building, the Blue Hens beat VCU 3-1 in the semifinals on Nov. 20, then Northeastern 3-2 in the final the next day. Delaware made its third NCAA Tournament appearance, falling 3-0 in the first round to Virginia Tech.
