WASHINGTON, D.C. – Delaware women's basketball dropped a heartbreaker at George Washington in the non-conference finale Sunday afternoon, 61-56.
The loss snapped a three-game win streak and dropped the Blue Hens to 3-1 on the year, while the Colonials improved to 3-3.
Both junior guard Jasmine Dickey and redshirt junior forward Ty Battle recorded double-doubles, with Battle now collecting a double-double in three of her first four games at Delaware.
Dickey nearly completed her 19th career double-double just in the first quarter, tallying 10 points and seven rebounds after one period. She finished with a game-high 23 points, 11 rebounds and two steals. Battle was huge on the boards, grabbing a season- and game-high 14 rebounds and scoring 10 points.
After GW took a 55-49 lead midway through the fourth quarter, the Blue Hens went on a 7-0 run to retake the lead. Battle spun through the paint for a lay-up, then blocked a shot on the defensive end that led to junior point guard Paris McBride finding Dickey for a fast break lay-up.
Senior guard Tee Johnson stole the ball in the backcourt and deposited another fast break lay-up before a Tyi Skinner free throw put Delaware up 56-55 with 1:33 left in the game.
Maddie Loder made a lay-up in traffic to put GW up 57-56 with 20 seconds remaining, and the Colonials closed the game out with four made free throws.
In her first game as a Blue Hen junior guard Jewel Smalls, who transferred to Delaware from Western Carolina, scored three points and grabbed five rebounds.
Delaware returns to action in the new year, starting Colonial Athletic Association play with a two-game series at College of Charleston on Jan. 2 and 3.
