Five Blue Hens score in double figures for the first time since 2016
BOSTON – Delaware cruised past Northeastern 86-59 inside the Cabot Center in the first Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball game of the season for both teams.
The Blue Hens (4-1, 1-0 CAA) outscored the Huskies (0-3, 0-1 CAA) 50-19 across the middle two quarters to establish an insurmountable 70-33 lead after three periods.
Five Blue Hens scored in double figures, the first time Delaware has had five players with 10+ points since a 56-44 win over UNCW on Feb. 28, 2016. Freshman guard Tyi Skinner led Delaware with 16 points in addition to four assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Redshirt junior forward Chyna Latimer knocked down four three-pointers on her way to a career-high 14 points, while junior guard Jewel Smalls drained three from beyond the arc for 11 points in just her second game in a Delaware uniform.
Redshirt junior forward Ty Battle recorded her fourth double-double in five games with 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Junior guard Jasmine Dickey has scored in double figures in every game this season, adding 13 points and seven boards of her own.
Northeastern's Mide Oriyomi led all scorers with 20 points.
The win was one of the best defensive performances of the season, with the Huskies' 59 points and .362 field goal percentage both season lows for Division I opponents. Delaware was efficient pressing Northeastern, turning 21 Huskies turnovers into 34 points.
The Blue Hens had a hot shooting night, draining 31 of their 65 shots (.477). Delaware's 10 made three-pointers and .417 shooting from deep both tied season highs. The Blue Hens' 20 assists also tied a season high, led by junior point guard Paris McBride's team-high seven.
Delaware plays Northeastern at the Cabot Center again tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 5 at 1 p.m. Delaware and Northeastern were scheduled to play Charleston and Elon, respectively, this weekend, but positive cases within those programs caused the CAA to shift the new series to Boston.
