NEWARK, Del. – Three Blue Hens reached the 20-point mark and Delaware did not trail in the second half in an 80-72 victory over rival Drexel Saturday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Nate Darling finished with 27 points while Kevin Anderson and Dylan Painter each scored 20 as the Blue Hens won their fourth consecutive game. Darling knocked down four three-pointers on the day, while Painter finished 7 of 7 from the floor and grabbed 10 rebounds to record his third double-double.
Delaware shot 51.8 percent from the field, hit seven three-pointers, and finished 15 of 20 from the foul line.
Camren Wynter scored 22 points for the Dragons, while James Butler added a double-double with 18 points and 16 boards.
The Blue Hens scored seven consecutive points to break away from an early 7-7 tie and led the rest of the way. Delaware took a 38-29 lead into the break, before the Dragons pulled within 49-46 with 13 minutes to play.
It was still a five-point game three minutes later, but Delaware answered with a 16-5 run to go up 69-53 and was never seriously threatened from there.
Martin Ingelsby
"This was a good win for us. After the bye week we were excited to get back out on the court. We were more efficient on the offensive end than in the first meeting against Drexel. Nate Darling got in a rhythm, Kevin Anderson was able to get downhill on drives, and Dylan Painter's physicality enabled him to finish inside. Dylan is coming along and is getting comfortable with our system; when we can play inside-out we're dangerous. Four in a row in this league is nice; we're a work in progress but I like where we're at."
Dylan Painter
"Drexel got us up there during our slump, but now we're bouncing back and it felt good to get the win. When our guards are shooting well, it opens up the court inside for us post players. Everybody stayed focused, and we have so many weapons with a lot of guys who can score."
