Blue Hens Drop Midweek Contest at Saint Joseph’s, 11-8

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – A late rally by Saint Joseph's proved to be too much as the 20th-ranked University of Delaware men's lacrosse team dropped a tough, physical 11-8 loss in the City of Brotherly Love.
Despite outshooting the Hawks by a tally of 42-32, Saint Joe's scored the game's final five goals, all in the fourth quarter to come away with the victory.
Sophomore Clay Miller and senior Charlie Kitchen both had two goals on the afternoon, while Owen Grant had two caused turnovers and three groundballs on the defensive side. Senior Matt DeLuca finished with seven saves on the day.
"Credit to Saint Joe's for stepping up and making plays down the stretch," head coach Ben DeLuca said. "This is an opportunity for us to learn and see how we respond. We have to get back and focus on getting better."
SJU jumped out of the gates, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the first, but once again Delaware would have a huge second quarter, scoring six goals by second different players to take a 6-4 lead into the break.
It was the second straight game that the Blue Hens scored six in the second quarter.
The third quarter was a back-and-forth battle with each team trading goals to send the game into the final 15 with Delaware leading 8-6.
SJU would quickly tie things up with two goals in the first 1:03 of the fourth quarter, and followed with three goals over a three-minute span.
The Blue Hens would fire off seven shots in the final eight minutes, but couldn't find the back of the net as the Hawks held on for the 11-8 victory.
