FORT MYERS, Fla. – Delaware continued its impressive start to the 2020 season as the Blue Hens defeated LIU, 11-2 in five innings, Sunday afternoon during its final game of the FGCU Kickoff Classic.
The Blue Hens, who won their third consecutive game, tied for first place at the tournament along with host FGCU as both teams finished with a 4-1 record. Delaware has started a season with at least four wins in its first five contests for just the fifth time since 1982, along with the 1988 (4-1), 1997 (4-1), 2013 (5-0) and 2015 (4-1) squads.
UD exploded for 14 hits on the day, including three apiece from Karolina Flores and Brooke Glanden, and scored in each of its five at bats. Glanden drove home three and belted the Blue Hens' first home run of the year, while Flores added a double and scored three runs. Chayanna Gallardo delivered a pair of doubles on the day, Ali Davis also had two hits and crossed the plate twice, and Brittney Mendoza drove home three runs.
Freshman pitcher Emily Winburn earned her first collegiate victory as she allowed two runs on five hits while striking out four in a complete game effort.
Mendoza worked a bases loaded walk before Halle Kisamore drove home Flores with a sacrifice fly to give the Blue Hens a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Delaware then added four runs in the second inning on an RBI groundout by Hanna Garber, a two-run double by Mendoza and a run-scoring single by Kisamore.
Garber tripled home Davis in the third, and she then scored on an RBI single by Glanden to make it an 8-0 game. LIU got on the board with two runs in the bottom half, before UD added an unearned run in the fourth and Glanden clobbered a two-run homer in the fifth.
