GILBERT, Ariz. – The University of Delaware field hockey team is consistently recognized for its successes on the field and in the classroom and Monday was no different as a program-record four Blue Hens were honored as Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division I Scholars of Distinction.
Sophie Giezeman and Grace Hoepfner earned the accolades for the first time in their careers while Emily Kresho and Grace Miller were recognized for the second time.
The Division I Scholars of Distinction program acknowledges student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.9 or higher through the first semester or the 2019-20 academic year.
"As a program we are so proud of Emily Kresho, Sophie Giezeman, Grace Hoepfner and Grace Miller for earning the honor of NFHCA Scholars of Distinction," exclaimed head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "All four of them deserve a big compliment and a ton of credit for balancing their school, sports and social lives. Aside from being great members of our field hockey program, all of them put themselves in an excellent position to further advance as student-athletes and people during their college experience and upon graduating a Blue Hen."
Delaware previously had two student-athletes honored in 2014, 2017 and 2018.
Earlier this month the NFHCA named 15 Blue Hens to the Academic Squad while Delaware was honored for the ninth straight season under Van de Kerkhof and his staff as a National Academic Team.
"Like all other field hockey teammates, these four understand what it is to be a 'true student-athlete' and with the right commitment and management tools can showcase excellence towards their academic and athletic experience while at the University of Delaware," stated Van de Kerkhof. "Emily, Sophie and both Graces have earned the respect and trust from their peers and have showcased not only to focus on taking care of their academic performance but are also happy to assist others on this team with academic and field hockey support and leadership."
Van de Kerkhof continued, "We are very glad to welcome all four of them back for our 2020 season. As a coaching and support staff, we are looking forward to further assist them here at the university and together with our entire players group compete for Delaware Pride and utilizing sports as a great educational tool."
