NEWARK, Del. – Delaware received impressive performances from Dylan Painter, Andrew Carr and Ryan Allen to pull away from Hofstra, 74-56, Friday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Painter recorded his second consecutive double-double with 18 points and a career-high 19 rebounds, the most boards by a Blue Hen since Jamelle Hagins grabbed 23 at Lafayette on Nov. 28, 2012.
Carr, who flourished from the high post against Hofstra's zone defense, added a career-high 19 points and four assists, while Allen also contributed 19 points and four assists on the day. Ebby Asamoah was the fourth Blue Hen in double figures as he chipped in 12 points during the win.
Delaware shot 47.7 percent from the field, including 54.3 percent in the second half, and enjoyed a commanding 46-28 margin in points in the paint. Meanwhile the Blue Hens limited the Pride to just 37.7 percent shooting, including only 33.3 percent in the final 20 minutes.
UD led by as many as 11 points in the first half and was still up nine at 30-21 with 3:41 on the clock, before Hofstra closed the period with a 10-2 run to pull within a point at the break.
The Blue Hens never trailed in the second half, and extended the margin to seven before a Tareq Coburn three-pointer made it a 60-56 game with 4:26 remaining.
Delaware took over from there, scoring the final 14 points of the game to pull away. Allen hit three consecutive three-pointers to make it a 13-point game, while Carr added three points and Painter converted a bucket in the final seconds.
Martin Ingelsby
"I'm really proud of this group, I challenged them at halftime to be mentally tougher and they responded. We stayed together as a team, and hopefully this gives us a confidence boost. I love what Andrew Carr gives us at the high point, and he was really efficient today. Dylan Painter was terrific inside, we need that presence every night."
Dylan Painter
"I appreciate the trust that my coaches and teammates have in me. I have confidence and am playing well right now, and am just trying to keep it up. It's important for us to have balance; all of our guys can play and today we got a lot of contributions from everybody."
Andrew Carr
"Our gameplan worked on feeding the high post against their zone. I was able to attack from there, either feeding my teammates or finding spots for open shots."
