Stephanie Aker, Kate Bradford, and Kate Brewster are the 2021 Blue Hens captains
NEWARK, Del. – Delaware women's lacrosse head coach Amy Altig announced the appointment of Stephanie Aker, Kate Bradford and Kate Brewster as captains for the 2021 season.
This is Bradford and Brewster's first year as captains, while Aker will captain the Blue Hens for the second straight year.
Aker, a graduate midfielder from Malvern, Pa., was the team's Most Improved Player for the 2019 season when she appeared in all 17 games, including 14 starts, and registered 12 caused turnovers, four ground balls, and a draw control. She started three games in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, causing a turnover in games against Georgetown and Duquesne.
"Steph is a compassionate leader who our team leans very heavily on," Altig said. "She is our 'Mother Hen' who relies on her experience, work ethic, and voice to lead our program. Steph is a natural leader, leading her team with her whole heart and passion for this team."
Bradford, a senior attacker from Merrimack, N.H., collected the most points of any Blue Hens returner during the 2020 season. In four games, she tallied three goals and three assists, highlighted by a 17-8 win over Duquesne on March 4 when she scored two goals and assisted on another.
"Bradford's approachable demeanor as a leader has provided an outlet of trust for her teammates," Altig said. "Her vocal presence, determination, and positive attitude creates a welcoming environment on and off the field. Kate's consistent hard work is recognized by her teammates and has helped set a tone within our program."
Brewster, a senior goalkeeper from Manchester, Md., was the Blue Hens' Team MVP in 2020 after playing every minute of the season in the cage. She ranked in the top 30 in the NCAA in several statistical categories, including ground balls per game (3.00 – 29th), saves per game (10.2 – 21st) and save percentage (.481 – 27th).
"Kate is our calming force and leads by example in everything she does," Altig said. "Her teammates recognize her ability to steady our team in stressful and chaotic situations. Her consistency on and off the field and her inclusive mentality have her teammates gravitating towards her."
Delaware opens the 2021 season on Feb. 20 with a home game against Temple inside Delaware Stadium at noon.
