Blue Hens’ Valiant Effort Falls Just Short in 1-0 Overtime Loss To No. 12 Maryland

NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware men's soccer team battled No. 12 Maryland into overtime, but the Terrapins scored late in the first extra session to come away with a 1-0 victory over the Blue Hens Tuesday night at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Justin Gielen sent in a cross from the right side before Joshua Bolma chested the ball to Ben Bender, whose rocket from 25 yards out deflected off a Blue Hen and into the top left corner of the net with 2:25 on the clock.
Maryland enjoyed a 17-4 shot advantage but Delaware did have its share of chances, including a shot by Ryan Mertz that sailed just over the crossbar early in the second half.
The Terps put nine shots on goal but the first eight were stopped by Scott Sampson, who set a career-high in saves during a stellar performance.
In addition to Mertz, Carlos Fernandez, Justin Ruth and Jake Steinberg also recorded shots for the Blue Hens.
"I thank (Maryland head coach) Sasho (Cirovski) for bringing Maryland up to Newark for the first time since 1941," said UD head coach Ian Hennessy. I thought we gave them a great effort tonight. They're obviously a top 20 team and a program we model ourselves after, and I think they showed their quality tonight. Having said that, our effort was outstanding. To put in a performance like that against a high caliber team after the bad luck we've had this season, I couldn't be prouder."
