Volleyball Tangles With Hofstra In CAA Showdown

NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware volleyball team fell in four sets (25-27, 22-25, 25-20, 20-25) to the Hofstra University Pride (9-7,3-2 CAA) in CAA action Saturday afternoon at the Carpenter Sports Building in Newark.
The Blue Hens (5-9,0-5 CAA) put together their finest hitting set in the third stanza to attack at a rate of .250. The Blue & Gold held the edge in aces (11-8) and digs (46-45). Hofstra hit at .256 while holding the narrow advantage in points (69-67), kills (60-59), blocks (11-7) and assists (48-47).
Set one saw a seesaw battle between the two teams with Delaware not giving up once they saw a set point on the board, 24-23. The Blue Hens capitalized off a service error by Pride's Ana Martinovic to knot the game at 24 apiece and then again behind Kirah Johnson's kill to make it 25-all. Hofstra then took set one after scoring two-straight, 27-25.
Trailing 16-13 in the second set, Delaware put together a crucial 5-0 run, headlined with Lani Mason serving, to erase the deficit and regain the lead, 18-16. Both teams fought for the advantage with the Pride coming on top to claim the 25-22 set two win.
Delaware shined in the third set, opening with an 11-3 run, with Lily Rogers serving during the Blue Hens scoring six straight points. Hofstra responded with an 8-2 run of its own to close the gap to two, 13-11. The Blue & Gold remained calm and maintained the lead and closed out the set scoring four straight points to capture the 25-20 set three win.
Going back-and-forth for the lead again during this match, Delaware went up three off a 4-0 run, 11-8. Hofstra erupted with an 8-2 run to regain the lead for good 16-13. The Blue Hens got in as close as two after a service error by Pride Yagmur Cinel before Florencia Wolkowyski's kill settled the 25-20 set four final.
Mason registered a match-high 15 kills (.379 attacking percentage) to go with 10 digs to post her fourth double-double of the season in leading Delaware. Seemans and Lauryn Richardson followed with 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Ezgi Basaranlar directed the Blue Hens offense with a match-high 41 assists and four aces. Katie Turner anchored the blue & gold defense with 15 digs. Basaranlar and Johnson each recorded four block assists.
Martinovic (12 digs) and Athina Dimitriadis (five solo blocks) captained the Pride to victory with 10 kills apiece. Beatriz Alves had 39 assists and Chiara Cucco scooped up 13 digs.
