Women’s Soccer Falls to UNCW, 3-1
10/24/2021 2:15:00 PM | Women's Soccer
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Delaware women's soccer team fell on the road to UNCW, 3-1, this afternoon at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
"I give our kids a ton of credit. Our roster is thin right now and we come down to Wilmington on a warm day and had the best of the play for long stretches," said head coach Mike Barroqueiro. "We are getting better as competitors every day. The kids are working hard and I couldn't be prouder. It's only a matter of time before we are consistently on the other side of these things. We'll get back at it at home on Thursday."
After a scoreless first half, the second half was filled with enough action to make a feature movie.
UNCW broke the scoreless match with a goal in the 48th minute and added a second goal two minutes later to take a quick 2-0 lead to start the second half.
Delaware's Lauren Elwell sailed a free-kick straight down the middle of the field, and after it bounced off a few players, Olivia Schuck was able to gain control and scoot it past the goalkeeper to the bottom right of the net for the goal. The score trimmed the Seahawks' lead to 2-1.
The Seahawks (10-2-1, 6-1 CAA) added their third and final goal late in the second half to seal the 3-1 win for the home team. UNCW finished the match with six shots, four on goal. UNCW held the edge in corner kicks 10 to 1. The Seahawks used two different goalkeepers in the match. Both goalies finished with one save apiece. The win bumped the Seahawks back into first place in the CAA standings.
The Blue Hens (5-9-2, 2-3-2 CAA) tallied seven shots with three of them on goal. Lauren Krinsky finished with one save on the day.
The final week of CAA play is coming up. Delaware will host William & Mary at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The Blue Hens will then play at James Madison on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. to wrap up regular season play.
