Women’s Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision to William & Mary

NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware women's soccer team fell to visiting William & Mary, 1-0, tonight at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium in its final home game of the season.
"We had some really good opportunities tonight. I give the girls a lot of credit. They have worked extremely hard and have done a really good job of digging themselves out of a whole that was self-inflicted," said head coach Mike Barroqueiro. "I'm gutted for them. You want to see careers continue with the opportunity to play in the postseason."
After a scoreless first half, the Tribe struck in the 52nd minute when Jillian O'Toole's shot bounced off the crossbar, and Riley Friesen connected with the ball to send it past Lauren Krinsky for the goal.
The Blue Hens had a few chances to score in the second half, including a bobble by Tribe goalkeeper Zoe Doughty after an Olivia Schuck shot that was nearly counted as a goal.
Krinsky collected five saves in the first half to finish with eight total saves tonight. Krinsky moves into a tie for No. 11 on the UD career saves chart with 111.
The Tribe held a 14-8 shot advantage and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
The victory improved William & Mary's overall record to 4-8-3 overall and its CAA mark to 2-3-3. Delaware falls to 5-10-2 and 2-4-2 in conference play.
Tonight's loss officially drops Delaware out of contention to qualify for the four-team Colonial Athletic Association Tournament.
"You have to deserve the luck and you have to deserve to win," said Barroqueiro. "We could've done so much more this season, including the preseason, to position ourselves better for success. At the end of the day, we have to own it in order to make progress. It's a tough pill to swallow, but by admitting it, it's the first step in moving forward."
The Blue Hens will travel to James Madison on Sunday, Oct. 31 for a 12 p.m. Halloween match to wrap up its 2021 campaign.
