NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware softball team held a home run derby last Monday, with proceeds benefiting UDance.
Participants could take one swing for $1, 10 swings for $5, and 20 swings for $10. Approximately 40 people participated in the derby, including members of the Blue Hen rowing, football, dance, and women's basketball teams. The softball program raised $465 during the derby.
The derby was the second one held by the Blue Hen softball program, with the first one occurring in the fall of 2019. The program hopes to hold another one in the spring following one of their games.
UDance is a student-run philanthropic organization founded at the University of Delaware in 2007, and has been dedicated to fighting childhood cancer ever since. All proceeds benefitting UDance provide immediate and direct financial aid to families affected by childhood cancer.
"The home run derby was a huge success for our team," said UD senior infielder Brittney Mendoza. "I am so pleased with the number of people who were able to come and show their support for our team and for UDance. Knowing that all of the money was raised for kids with pediatric cancer and families going through such a difficult time was such an amazing feeling. I am just so happy that myself and my fellow UDance reps were able to organize this event and help so many families. Every child deserves a childhood, and being able to take any stress off of their families makes me feel so proud."
