BOSTON, Mass. – 55 degrees, drizzling and winds traveling East 17 miles per hour on this Saturday morning in Boston, Mass., all eyes were on the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Cross Country Championships in Franklin Park, hosted by Northeastern University. The University of Delaware cross country team looked to improve from their last conference championship appearance and were able to place third out of nine teams guided by a stellar performance by Tina Capparell.
Elon hoisted the title for the third-straight year with a score of 27 behind the leadership of the Phoenix's Maria Ahm capturing her second-straight CAA Women's Runner of the Year award. Northeastern and the Blue Hens both scored 66 points but the tiebreak edge and second-place distinction went to the hosts. Delaware finished in third place and James Madison (85), William & Mary (157), Charleston (163), Towson (184), Hofstra (225), and UNCW (244) followed in respective order.
"We came in with the goal of really finishing second, that was our hope," said head coach Ryan Waite, "We ended up tying for second place but lost the tiebreaker, so third place overall finish. Right now, it stings a little bit and we are a little bit disappointed. But, when we take a step back from this in a couple of days, I think we will be able to feel pretty proud of it. We had a really hard year and it felt like we were just trying to piece this thing together. I am so proud of the women for coming together today for the last big one of the year for us and fighting that hard and putting us in the position where we almost pulled off something as good as we have ever done. We can't ask for more than that."
Among the field of 74 runners, Capparell led the Blue Hens for the second-straight race, crossing the 6K finish line in a time of 21:49.50 for fifth place. Susanna Weir was right behind Capparell in sixth place posting a time of 21:53.80. Hannah Lindgren was the next Blue Hen to finish the race in 22:32.30, good enough for 13th place. Julien Webster (16th, 22:37.50) and Kate Rathman (26th, 23:10.20) rounded out Delaware's scoring five. With Capparell, Weir and Lindgren finishing in the top 14, they all earned All-CAA Team honors.
Waite added, "Three all-conference, it ties for the best that we have ever done. Tina, Susanna, Hannah ran fantastic. Julien, such a great race, by far her best race of the year. [She] really made it possible for us to even be in this position. We fell a little short of our goal but all in all, a good day, proud of the girls and this is something to build off of for years to come."
Also racing for the Blue & Gold were Devon Hoernlein (23:21.80), Jessica Pidgeon (23:22.70) and Katie Hally (23:27.60), where all three placed 33rd, 34th and 37th, respectively.
