HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -Â The No. 21 Delaware field hockey team earned its second-straight CAA win and fourth-straight win overall after defeating Hofstra 3-2 Friday afternoon.Â
"We found a way to hang on to the win today but it is clear to all that our performance was below our own standards and expectations," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "A good wake-up moment for our team as we get deeper into CAA conference play."
Sophomore Julia Duffhuis got the Blue Hens on the board first, scoring on a corner with assists from Ashlyn Carr and Morgan Bradford in the 10th minute of the first period.Â
Junior Morgan Rigual netted her first goal of the season in the second period, dribbling through the middle of the circle after a rebound to get it behind Hofstra's Merlijn van der Vegt.
In the third quarter, Rigual was able to score again on a fast break. She received a long pass from Femke Strien into the circle, pulling van der Vegt out of the goal, and driving the ball into the net from the left side of the circle.Â
Hofstra answered back, netting two goals within 22 seconds in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter with 3:30 left on the clock, the Pride pulled van der Vegt, to put another attacker on the field in an attempt to tie the game. Both teams went scoreless in the fourth period.
"As a coaching staff we are looking forward to see the team bounce back and play Delaware hockey the way we know we could and should versus Northeastern on Sunday."
The Pride edged the Blue Hens 6-5 in penalty corners and 8-6 in shots on the day. Delaware had a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.
The Blue Hens continue their CAA road trip with a game at Northeastern on Sunday, October 10 at 12 p.m.
