NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware volleyball team closed out the regular season in strong fashion by winning nine of its last 12 matches, earning the fourth seed in this week's CAA Tournament. Fifth-year head coach Sara Matthews will lead the Blue Hens down I-95 to Towson University on Thursday for a quarterfinal duel against fifth-seeded Northeastern (12-14).
THE QUEST TO THE CAA TROPHY AND THE NCAA AUTOMATIC BID
The 2021 CAA Volleyball Championship, presented by Primis, will run from Thursday, Nov. 18 through Saturday, Nov. 20 at Towson's SECU Arena. The winner of the tournament will earn the automatic bid into the 2021 NCAA Volleyball Division I Tournament.
The Blue Hens and the Huskies are slated to open the quarterfinal round on Thursday at 4 p.m. The winner of that matchup will face the top-seeded/regular-season champions/defending conference champions Towson (24-4) at 4 p.m. on Friday. The other quarterfinal matchup serving as Thursday's nightcap features third-seeded Charleston (16-11) and sixth-seeded Hofstra (14-13) starting at 6:30 p.m. The winner of that match will face the second-seeded Elon (16-10) at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
POSTSEASON HISTORY
On the quest to capture its fifth CAA championship in 2019, Delaware fell short to James Madison in the semifinals. The Blue Hens will be seeking an 11th conference semifinal berth since entering the league in 2001. The Blue & Gold won back-to-back titles in 2007-08 and again 2010-11. Overall, the Blue Hens are 15-10 all-time in CAA tournament games.
SEASON/ALL-TIME SERIES
Delaware and Northeastern will be meeting for the third time this fall, as the teams split two regular season matchups in Boston. Thursday's match will be the 57th all-time meeting, with the Huskies holding a 30-26 record over the Blue Hens.
LEADING THE BLUE & GOLD TO THE PROMISE LAND
Currently, Delaware is on a three-game winning streak and finished the regular season posting a 14-12 record and 8-8 in conference play to earn a spot in the six-team tournament. The Blue Hens will look to the leadership of Lani Mason, Savannah Seemans, Ezgi Basaranlar, Lauryn Richardson, Katie Turner and Grace Underwood during this postseason run. Mason leads the team with 327 kills (3.41 k/per set) for 385.5 points (4.02 pts/per set). Seemans is right behind her with 259 kills (2.70 k/per set) and leads the way with 43 service aces (.45 sa/per set). Richardson adds to the mix sitting in third with 207 kills (2.16 k/per set). Anchoring Delaware's defense is Turner, as she scooped up a team-leading 349 digs (3.64 dig/per set).
