12/1/2021 10:30:00 AM | Track & Field
NEWARK, Del. – Interim head track & field coach Ryan Waite is excited to announce the full 2021-22 indoor/outdoor track schedule as the Blue Hens is set to compete in six indoor and nine outdoor events this upcoming season, starting Saturday, Dec. 4.
"I'm very excited about our schedule this year. Our athletes will have the opportunity to compete against some of the best athletes in the nation, which I believe will help us to some great marks," said Waite. "Indoors will be highlighted by our trips to Boston. Those meets bring in some of the best teams in the nation and consistently produce qualifiers for the NCAA championship. We aspire to be a program that gets athletes to the NCAA meet so that's the kind of competition we need to seek out."
Delaware will open its lone indoor event of the 2021 calendar year this Saturday, Dec. 4, at Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener hosted by Boston University. 44 days later, the Blue Hens will kick off the new year at St. John's University's MLK Day Invitational in Staten Island, N.Y. on Monday, Jan. 17 and remain in Staten Island Friday, Jan. 28 to compete in UAlbany's Great Dane Invitational. The Blue & Gold will head to Collegeville, Pa. for the Frank Colden Invitational hosted by Ursinus College on Saturday, Feb. 5 and then travel up north for Boston University's two-day David Hemery Valentine Invite Feb. 11-12. Delaware will close out the indoor campaign at the ECAC Indoor Championships Mar. 5-6.
Waite added, "Outdoors will have quite a few chances for high-level competition in the regular season, particularly at the Raleigh Relays and the Virginia Challenge. And obviously, we want to be at our best once the CAA Championships come around."
The Blue & Gold will open the outdoor season in Richmond, Va. at the Fred Hardy Invitational hosted by Richmond University Mar. 18-19 and then participate in the three-day Raleigh Relays hosted by NC State in Raleigh, N.C. Mar. 24-26. Delaware will take a state tour of Virginia in four-straight meets starting with the three-day Colonial Relays hosted by conference foe William & Mary in Williamsburg Mar. 31-Apr. 2. The Blue Hens will travel to Fairfax for George Mason University's Spring Invite Saturday, Apr. 9 and then head to Harrisonburg for conference foe James Madison Invitational on Saturday, Apr. 16. Delaware will conclude their tour of Virginia in Charlottesville at UVA's Virginia Challenge Apr. 22-23 and then close out the regular season at Penn Relays Apr. 28-30 in Philadelphia.
The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Outdoor Championships will be held on May 6-7 in Boston, Mass. hosted by Northeastern and the ECAC Outdoor Championships will take place May 14-15.
Waite commented, "I feel our schedule this year prepares us well not only to compete well at CAAs, but also to hit marks that can qualify our athletes to the NCAA first round. We're excited to get going this week!"
