CHARLESTON, S.C. – Blue Hen senior Kevin Anderson made a steal in the final seconds as the Delaware men's basketball team earned a dramatic 67-66 win over Charleston Friday afternoon at TD Arena.
Anderson went to the foul line with 12 seconds left with a chance to extend the Blue Hens' lead, but missed the front end of a one-and-one. But after the Cougars called a time out with seven seconds left, Anderson stole the ball from Charleston's John Meeks and dribbled the clock out to seal the win.
Jameer Nelson, Jr. led Delaware with a game-high 22 points, while Anderson and Ryan Allen each contributed 14 on the day. Allen has now scored 1,619 career points, moving into fourth place in program history. Delaware, which snapped a two-game losing skid, won in TD Arena for the first time since 2015.
Meeks paced the Cougars with 17 points, while Brenden Tucker contributed 15 on the afternoon.
Charleston used an early 10-point run to go in front 14-10, but Delaware battled back to take a 23-19 advantage on a three-pointer by Reggie Gardner with 8:35 left in the half. The Blue Hens scored six consecutive points late in the period to go up five, before Tucker drilled a three-pointer with 31 seconds on the clock as UD took a slim 34-32 advantage into the break.
Delaware went on a seven-point run early in the second half, extending the margin to 44-34 on an Andrew Carr dunk in transition with 17:25 remaining.
The Cougars pulled back within two but the Blue Hens countered with six straight points to go back up eight at 59-51 at the 8:21 mark. It was a three-point game when Dylan Painter hit two free throws and Allen scored on a runner in the paint to make it a 65-58 game with 4:15 to play.
Charleston closed within a point and had a chance to go in front, but Dimitrius Underwood missed a jumper with 19 seconds left. Anderson was fouled and missed the free throw, but then came up with the decisive steal to secure the victory.
Martin Ingelsby
"I'm really proud of our group to pick up a big road win in a tough place to play. It's good to see Ryan Allen playing well and having fun out there; we need him to score the basketball. We have three dynamic guards, and they all were really good today. We did what we needed to do to get the job done and split the road trip."
