NEWARK, Del. – Sophomore Mike Robinson was absolutely lights out as Delaware men's lacrosse used a hot start to defeat Saint Joseph's, 16-13, Tuesday night at Delaware Stadium.
Robinson scored nine goals, the most since Hayler Osborn scored the same number vs. Towson State on May 4, 1963. He took just 12 shots and added three ground balls.
Senior Matt Kileary made 16 stops in net. Junior Owen Grant filled the stat sheet with seven ground balls, five caused turnovers, a bouncer goal on the run and an assist. Tye Kurtz chipped in hat trick with three goals and one assist.
Robinson came to play, scoring the first two and three of the first four goals as the Blue Hens jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the 9:04 mark. St. Joe's scored, but Delaware answered with five-straight (including two from Robinson) to push out to a 9-1 lead at the 12:43 mark of the second quarter.
The Hawks would not quit, posting a 5-1 run in the second quarter, but the Hens responded by scoring two of the final three goals to hold a 12-7 advantage at the break.
In his first game of the year, Charlie Kitchen kept his point streak alive, finding Tye Kurtz from long range to start the scoring off in the third quarter. The Hawks responded again with three-consecutive goals to pull within three, 13-10.
Robinson refused to be denied, scoring the next two to push the Blue Hens lead back to five with 8:29 remaining. SJU scored three of the final four, as UD hung on for the win.
