Celebration of Champions: 1971 Men’s Lacrosse Wins Middle Atlantic Conference Title

The 1971 Delaware men's lacrosse team finished with a 9-3 overall record, including an 8-2 Middle Atlantic Conference mark, as the Blue Hens won their second straight MAC championship. The squad also has the distinction of holding the NCAA Division 1 record for scoring defense (3.67, allowing just 44 goals in 12 games), a mark that will likely never be broken.
Led by head coach Mickey Heinecken, Delaware opened its season with an emphatic 20-5 win over Gettysburg, before dropping a 5-4 decision to Lehigh. The Blue Hens then reeled off five straight victories over Loyola (13-2), Western Maryland (8-6), Swarthmore (10-0), Lafayette (13-1) and Lebanon Valley (9-0).
Following a pair of defeats to Towson State and Franklin & Marshall, Delaware bounced back by crushing Stevens Tech, 16-1. The Blue Hens then shut out Drexel, 13-0, before closing the season with a 17-6 triumph over Bucknell.
Attackman Don Carnevale, who led the squad with 33 goals and 45 points, was named first team All-MAC, along with midfielder Denis Curran and defenseman Reagan Beck.
Chuck Dvorak, who led UD with 19 assists while ranking second with 24 goals and 43 points, was selected second team all-conference, along with Stephen Radebaugh.
