TOWSON, Md. – The University of Delaware field hockey team opened CAA play with a 4-0 win over Towson on Friday afternoon.
"A great afternoon for Delaware Hockey! Compliments to our players group for taking another step forward in their development and performance as a team," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "I am proud of them for the way they worked and played together on both sides of the ball. This teamwork resulted in many interceptions and some quality attacks, allowing us to win the day."
The Blue Hens led an offensive battle from the beginning, scoring three goals in the first half and allowing the Tigers only five total shots.
Sarah Iannuzzi put the Blue Hens on the board in the tenth minute with her first career goal – a deflection off of a long ball from Emily Kresho.
Eight minutes later, the Blue Hens earned a corner that resulted in Grace Hoepfner putting away her first goal of the season off of a deflection, assisted by Femke Strien and Grace Miller.
Ashley Iannuzzi joined her sister in the scoring column with her first career goal, tipping in a pass from Berber Bakermans in the 23rd minute.
Morgan Rigual tallied her first goal of the season to wrap up the game in the 57th minute, assisted by Femke Strien, leaving the Towson Tigers scoreless in the CAA opener.
The Blue Hens return home to Rullo Stadium this Sunday, March 21, against Temple University.
