Carpenter goes 3-for-3 in game two with a homer
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The University of Delaware baseball team earned a split with Lehigh Saturday afternoon at Walker Field, dropping the opener, 3-2, before taking the second, 5-0.
Â
"I'm really proud of our guys for the way the responded in game two," said head coach Jim Sherman. "We put these games together at the last minute and our team put in the work to prepare and put us in position to win."
Â
Game One
Graduate student Kyle Baker got things started for the Blue Hens with a double in the top of the first and came around to score on a strikeout, wild pitch that would have ended the inning to give Delaware the early lead.
Â
Lehigh tied it up in the home half as both starters settled in to hold each side scoreless over the next three innings.
Â
Baker had the big hit again in the fifth when he followed a redshirt junior Jordan Hutchins double with an RBI base hit to make it 2-1.
Â
Junior Chris Ludman was cruising on the mound and held Lehigh scoreless for the next three, including a pair of 1-2-3 innings, before surrendering a two-run home run that gave the Mountain Hawks the edge heading into the ninth. The Blue Hens went down in order to drop the first.
Â
Ludman went 8.0 strong with six strikeouts and scattered five hits while Baker was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Â
Game Two
Junior Joseph Carpenter went 3-for-3 with a solo home run, two runs and RBI and a walk to pace Delaware in the second game.
Â
The Blue Hens struck first again, plating three runs in the second inning with the help of a Mountain Hawk error as back-to-back hits to lead off the inning by senior Jack Goan and Carpenter set the table.
Â
Freshman Dom Velazquez put together another strong outing, working 5.0 innings with eight strikeouts and no walks or runs. He scattered five hits and stranded the bases loaded in the fourth to keep the Blue Hens in front.
Â
Baker picked up his third hit of the afternoon in the top of the sixth and came around to score on another Lehigh error off the bat of freshman Joey Loynd to make it 4-0.
Â
Carpenter led-off the seventh inning with a big fly and freshman Reece Bolton worked himself into some trouble in the home half before graduate student Derek Wakeley came on to work out of a bases-loaded jam.
Â
The Delaware pitching staff stranded a total of 10 Mountain Hawks on the base paths as Velazquez, Bolton and Wakeley combined for the shutout.
Â
The Blue Hens are back in action with a home-and-home, two-game series with Saint Joseph's, traveling to Philadelphia March 27 and hosting the Hawks March 28. Both games are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
