HARRISONBURG, Va. – Jalen Ray finished with 34 points and ignited a key second half Hofstra run as the Pride defeated Delaware, 83-75, Sunday afternoon in the CAA Tournament Quarterfinals at JMU's Atlantic Union Bank Center.
Hofstra, which defeated the Blue Hens in the CAA Tournament for the third straight year, advances to Monday's semifinals while Delaware ends its season with a 7-8 record.
The game was a seesaw affair that was tied 61-61 with 7:50 remaining, but Hofstra used an 11-2 spurt to take control and go up nine with 4:41 to play. Delaware, playing its first game in five weeks, closed within six point four times late but would not get closer.
Kevin Anderson scored a season-high 22 points for the Blue Hens, going 5 of 7 from three-point range while adding five assists and three steals. Dylan Painter added 15 points and nine rebounds, while fellow senior Ryan Allen also scored 15 points on the day. Johnny McCoy was the fourth Blue Hen in double figures with 11 points on the day.
Neither team led by more than four points during a tight first half that featured 17 lead changes, while a foul line jumper by Andrew Carr with 30 seconds left gave the Blue Hens a 38-36 lead at the half
Two Allen free throws and an Ebby Asamoah triple put Delaware up seven early in the second half, but Hofstra answered with a nine-point run to go back in front 45-43 with 16:23 remaining.
Allen hit another free throw to tie the game at 47-47 before the Pride scored seven straight points to take a 54-47 advantage with 12:41 on the clock.
Anderson countered with consecutive three-pointers to quickly bring UD back within a point, and after a Ray triple, Painter scored inside and then added two free throws to knot the contest at 59-59 with nine minutes left.
The game was still tied 61-61 just over a minute later, but Hofstra countered with the pivotal run to take control.
Martin Ingelsby
"Credit Hofstra, they're a really talented team and won a tough, physical game. I thought it was a heck of a college basketball game with two good teams going at it. We got into a rut offensively during the last 10 minutes and needed to be a little more effective around the basket. We had a couple of defensive lapses in the second half; Jalen Ray is a heck of a player and he took advantage. Our guys were ready to compete; I'm proud to be their coach and am disappointed for them that they don't get to play together again this season."
Kevin Anderson
"I played pretty well, but it doesn't matter since we didn't get the win. We had some miscommunication on defense which allowed them to get too many open shots. We also didn't get to the basket enough and settled for jumpers."
