NEWARK, Del. – Blue Hen junior forward Sara D'Appolonia scored twice as the University of Delaware women's soccer team defeated Delaware State, 5-1, in its home opener Tuesday night at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Olivia Schuck opened the scoring just 5:45 into the contest as she collected a loose ball off a corner kick and scored from six yards out to give Delaware the early lead.
D'Appolonia scored her first goal of the night in the 17th minute when she took a long pass from Anna Diffendal down the left side and fired a shot into the top left corner of the net from 16 yards out. In the 35th minute Kate Henesey found Raychel Speicher in the box, as she spun and fired a shot into the top right corner to give the Blue Hens a 3-0 advantage at the half.
Geligne Franklin got the Hornets on the board in the 51st minute by sliding a low shot from the left endline past UD goalkeeper Lauren Krinsky.
However D'Appolonia got the goal back for UD in the 67th minute as she stole a ball from a DSU defender, dribbled down the center of the field and fired a low shot into the left corner of the cage to make it a 4-1 game. Less than six minutes later Elizabeth Weimer scored an impressive goal with a shot from the left side from 16 yards out into the far corner of the net.
The Blue Hens controlled play for most of the night, finishing with a 14-2 advantage in shots and a 10-1 edge in corner kicks. Krinsky needed to make just one save in the UD goal, while Hornets keeper Ashley Maribo finished with four saves on the night.
