The 2001 Delaware baseball team went 45-15 and won the America East regular season and tournament titles to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
The Blue Hens, led by first-year head coach Jim Sherman, lost five of their first six games but then reeled off an 11-game winning streak. Later in the year Delaware won 14 in a row, improving to 33-10 on April 29. Delaware later swept a four-game weekend series from Drexel, before taking three of four at Hartford to finish with a 22-6 league mark.
UD hosted the America East Tournament at Frawley Stadium, opening with a 7-3 win over Northeastern before defeating Towson twice, 4-1 and 7-0, to win its fourth straight league tournament crown.
Delaware was sent to the Columbus, Ohio Regional and stunned the host Buckeyes, 5-4 in 10 innings, during the first game of the tournament. The win was the first NCAA Tournament victory for the Blue Hens since 1992.
UD then dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to No. 23 Mississippi State, before ending the year with a 12-11 defeat to Kent State.
Andrew Salvo, who hit a team-high .372 on the year, was a third team ABCA All-American. Chris Kolodzey, who batted .361 during the season, and Vic Sage, who went 11-3 with a 3.49 ERA, were each second team ABCA All-East honorees.
Salvo and Kolodzey were joined on the All-America East first team by Peter Maestrales and Kris Dufner. Second team selections included Sage, Rich McGuire, Vince Vukovich and Reid Gorecki.
Vukovich posted a .358 batting average for the Blue Hens, while Goreki hit .340 and Dufner batted .328 on the season. McGuire finished 10-3 with a 4.05 ERA on the mound, while Jason Vincent compiled a 9-2 record.
