Carpenter goes reached base seven times in the doubleheader
BOSTON – The University of Delaware baseball team fell in both games of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Northeastern by a combined two runs, dropping the first, 1-0, and the second, 6-5, at Friedman Diamond.
Game One
It was an old-fashioned pitchers' duel as junior Chris Ludman went the distance on the bump for the Blue Hens, unfortunately getting tagged with the loss after giving up just one run in the first inning. He struck out seven and scattered five hits, while stranding a runner on third base to end a threat in the seventh.
Northeastern kept the Delaware batters off balance throughout game one, however junior Joseph Carpenter was able to string together a two-hit game. Freshmen Joey Loynd and Aidan Kane were both able to collect doubles, but the Blue Hens went scoreless.
Game Two
A four-run eighth inning put the Blue Hens in the lead, but Northeastern pieced together two of its own in the home half to take game two.
This time, Delaware wasted no time as graduate student Kyle Baker led-off the game with a double to center field and freshman Aidan Riley drove him home to take an early 1-0.
The Huskies took the lead in the third inning, plating two, and tacked on another run in the fifth to make it 3-1.
The Blue Hens were able to put a runner in scoring position in the ninth, but Northeastern stranded him there.
Junior Jordan Hutchins was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and Carpenter lived on the base paths all afternoon, going 2-for-2 with a double and three walks in game two.
Freshman Dom Velazquez worked 5.0 innings, fanning nine batters and allowing only two earned runs.
The teams will close out the quick four-game series Saturday with another doubleheader in Boston, beginning at 11 a.m.
