HARRISONBURG, Va. – Wind? No problem for Delaware track & field. The Blue Hens got out to a record-setting start at the Colonial Athletic Association outdoor championship today, as they jumped, ran, and threw their way to a solid day one of competition.
The Blue Hens entered the championship with a hefty resume leading up to this weekend. With school and personal best records falling with ease, the ladies were poised to carry that momentum with them to Harrisonburg.
After having won the last CAA Outdoor Track & Field title in 2019, the Blue Hens enter tomorrow in third place (30 points) with more field events on deck and a wealth of competitors competing in finals on the track.
Freshman Megan Albamonti kicked off the Blue Hens' medal count with a javelin throw of 49.60 meters (162-09) on her last attempt to break the UD school record, set a JMU facility record, and stand atop the podium with the gold medal shining bright. It marks the second straight javelin crown for a Blue Hen.
Chioma Njoku's third attempt of the day was far enough to earn the redshirt freshman a second-place finish in the hammer throw. Njoku launched the hammer 53.39 meters (174-02) to pick up eight points in the event. Senior Bethany Clement added three points with a sixth-place mark of 49.19m (161-05) to give the Blue Hens 11 points in the event.
On the track, the Blue Hens used the wind to their advantage to secure a plethora of spots in tomorrow's finals.
The short sprint freshmen duo of Trinity Tapper and Aja Davis both secured spots in the 100-meter and 200-meter finals. Tapper has the second-best time heading into the 100-meter finals tomorrow with a wind-aided sprint of 11.57. Davis registered the sixth-best time in the prelims at 11.73. In the 200 meters, Tapper raced to a time of 24.93 and was followed closely by Davis at 25.00.
Senior Sydni Stovall's time of 57.15 in the 400 meters was the fourth-best overall.
Graduate student Holly Manning and senior Jessica Harding posted the top two times in the 800-meter field this afternoon, as they each won their heats. With times of 2:11.00 and 2:13.61, the Blue Hens are a heavy favorite to medal on Saturday.
Mixing in some hurdle action, senior Taliah Cintron won her 400-meter hurdle heat with a time of 1:04.84 to head into Saturday with the second-best time of the weekend.
Graduate student Roxanne Ramirez will represent UD in the 1,500-meter finals after clocking a 4:44.13 in the event.
