HARRISONBURG, Va. – No. 22 James Madison hit three home runs while Odicci Alexander fired a no-hitter as the top-seeded Dukes defeated Delaware, 5-0, Wednesday afternoon at the CAA Softball Championship.
The Blue Hens, who defeated Hofstra, 1-0, in their first game of the day, will next play Thursday at 2 p.m. against the winner of Wednesday night's Hofstra-Elon game. JMU will face Drexel on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the winner's bracket.
Kate Gordon got the Dukes off to a good start by hitting a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first inning, but UD starting pitcher Emily Winburn responded to fire three straight scoreless frames from there.
However JMU pulled away in the fifth, as Gordon hit another longball off Winburn before Sara Jubas went deep against Blue Hen relief pitcher Delani Sheehan. Lynsey Meeks added a two-run single during the frame to extend the Dukes' lead to five.
Alexander set a CAA Tournament record with 16 strikeouts while improving to 12-0 in the circle for JMU. The Blue Hens were no-hit for the first time since the opening game of the 2014 season against No. 13 UCLA.
