NEWARK, Del. – After one season at the helm of the Delaware women's tennis program, Pablo Montana has been promoted to Director of Tennis for the Blue Hens as he will now be the head coach for both the men's and women's tennis programs.
"I am grateful for the work that Coach Montana did with our women's program last year and I could not be more excited to promote him to the Director of Tennis for our Blue Hen's tennis programs," said Chrissi Rawak, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation. "It is clear that Pablo brings the perfect blend of being a terrific coach of the sport and a focus on creating the very best environment and experiences for our student-athletes. The future is very bright with Pablo leading our tennis programs!"
As the interim head coach, Montana led the women's tennis program to a perfect 7-0 record, the first undefeated season since 1997, and a 2-0 conference mark leading to five Colonial Athletic Association honors for the Blue Hens.
Since being named the head men's tennis coach in December of 2016, Montana has brought nothing but success to UD tennis. During the 2020-21 campaign, Montana completed his fifth season as the head coach of the Delaware men's tennis program. The men's team tallied a 7-3 overall mark and 2-0 CAA record, while a pair of Blue Hens earned All-CAA accolades.
"I am extremely grateful for this opportunity to lead and guide both programs and a special thank you to Chrissi and Jenn (Judy) for their continued support and belief in me," said Montana. "Both programs are in a very good spot right now and I am excited in the direction we are headed."
Montana has played an instrumental part in the success of UD tennis. In his first season at UD (2016-17), the Hens posted the most wins (nine) since the 2010-11 campaign. From there, Delaware registered 17 wins in 2018 and 14 wins in 2019.
In its last complete season, the men's tennis program was on a 14-match win streak when the 2019-20 season was halted and finished the year with a 14-1 record (.933), the highest winning percentage for UD since 1974-75.
"We brought Pablo to Delaware five years ago because of his passion for the sport and his focus on the development of his student-athletes, both athletically and personally," said Judy. "It's been impressive to watch the growth of the men's program under his leadership, and we are excited about him officially bringing that leadership to the women's program as Director of Tennis."
Montana arrived in Newark after leading the Cal U women's tennis program to a remarkable 276-83 (.769) record from 2002-2016. He was named the 10th All-Time Winningest Coach in Division II Women's Tennis by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in 2020. The two-time ITA National Coach of the Year, five-time ITA Regional Coach of the Year, and eight-time PSAC West Coach of the Year posted 12 consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the quarterfinals seven times in eight seasons from 2007-14.
