NEWARK, Del. - Delaware head women's lacrosse coach Amy Altig has announced the addition of Riley Smith as Assistant Women's Lacrosse Coach.
"We're thrilled to welcome Riley into the Blue Hen family," said Altig. "Riley brings an incredibly successful coaching career from Wesleyan to Delaware. They were consistently ranking in the top 20 and she played a major role in their improvement every year culminating in them being championship runner-ups which is incredible. She knows what it takes to create a positive culture and understands the demands of the student-athlete."
Smith arrives in Newark after four seasons at Wesleyan University as the Associate Head Women's Lacrosse Coach. At Wesleyan, Smith held a 36-14 overall record with the program ending each of her four seasons nationally ranked in the IWLCA Division III Coaches Poll.Â
This past season the Cardinals finished as the NESCAC Championship Runner-up, after making an appearance in the 2019 NCAA Division III Semifinals. In 2018, Wesleyan advanced to the third round of the NCAA DIII Tournament, earning its first program win in the NCAA tournament that season.
While at Wesleyan, Smith developed 11 All-Americans, 11 All-NESCAC players, and successfully recruited 40 players from 6 states. She also served as an assistant field hockey coach for the Cardinals and has served as a head coach and recruiting coordinator for the Nor'easter Premier Lacrosse Club in New Haven, Conn., since 2013.Â
"Riley is going to be a great addition to our program because she's very passionate about the student-athletes and the sport of lacrosse. She believes in impacting people on and off the field. She's determined and makes sure the job is done correctly and for the right reasons. When people think about Riley, it's her positive energy and enthusiasm for lacrosse that stands out. She shows up with a smile on her face and outworks every person that is there. I'm so excited that Riley will be on our sidelines impacting the team for the better and helping us drive our program in a really successful direction."
A 2017 graduate from Fairfield University, Smith earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and played four years for the Stags as a midfielder. The Guilford, Conn., native appeared in 20 games throughout her career, was a member of the 2015 MAAC Tournament Championship team and competed in 2015 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Tournament.
