Women's Soccer Registers OT Win at Loyola Maryland

BALTIMORE, Md. - In their first overtime game of the season, the Delaware women's soccer team was victorious with a 1-0 victory on the road at Loyola Maryland.
"I couldn't be prouder of our kids and their fight today. Loyola is a well-coached, dangerous team with a trio of great attackers up front," said head coach Mike Barroqueiro. "I was proud that we were able to limit their opportunities. When you get into overtime, it's all about grit and executing the details. I was happy with the territory we took and obviously Damali's finish was class. Most importantly, we had a bunch of kids come off the bench and give us quality minutes that we needed. There's no doubt that we have a bunch to learn but I'm so proud of the kids heart and never say die attitude. They are battling and that's a quality that will serve them well."
The Blue Hens battled the Greyhounds for the first 90 minutes of regulation with neither team able to squeeze a goal past the other.
That all changed in overtime when Delaware pressed harder on the gas to shift the Loyola Maryland defense around and put them on their heels.
With the Blue Hens actively applying pressure, they found themselves outnumbering the Greyhounds and it was just a few moments later that Loyola Maryland collapsed from the pressure.
In the 93rd minute, the ball moved with ease from Sara D'Appolonia to Caitlin St. Leger. It was one more pass that did the trick as Leger placed the ball right at the feet of Damali Simon-Ponte and it was a sight to see as she sailed the ball right over the goalkeeper's outstretched hands and into the top left of the net with just inches between the post and the ball to seal the win for the Blue Hens.
Delaware celebrated victoriously on the field as it improved to 3-5 on the season and 2-1 on the road. Goalkeeper Lauren Krinsky recorded three saves in the game.
The loss dropped Loyola Maryland to 3-4-1. The Greyhounds registered seven shots in the game.
Next up, Delaware hosts Princeton on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 1 p.m. at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
