RICHMOND, Va. – Blue Hen senior Roberto Nieves earned his second consecutive CAA Men's Golfer of the Week honor on Wednesday after leading Delaware to the Golfweek Fall Challenge team title.
Nieves tied for fourth place in the individual standings by carding a 10 under par 69-69-68-206 on the par 72, 7,005-yard True Blue Course, tied for the third lowest three-round score in UD history. He now holds three of the four lowest 54-hole scores in program history.
Nieves recorded 15 birdies while making just five bogeys during the three-day invitational. Five of his six rounds this season have been in the 60's. Dating back to the spring, he has finished among the top seven individuals in each of his last six tournaments.
Delaware entered Tuesday's play trailing Mercer by 17 strokes but used a tremendous third round to come back and win the Golfweek Fall Challenge crown.
The Blue Hens fired an 18 under par 270 on Tuesday, the second lowest team round in program history, to finish first out of 18 squads with an 834 total. That score is the lowest three-round total in UD history, easily eclipsing the previous mark of 848 set at the JMU Invitational in 2005.
