NEWARK, Del. -Â The No. 22 Delaware field hockey team (2-5) dropped a 0-2 decision to No. 10 Rutgers (6-1) Sunday afternoon at Rolle Stadium.
"We showed a fight and our emotions in today's game," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "I am proud of my team for opening up more towards each other on how they feel and either complement or confront each other which is another sign of growth within our players group. The result does not reflect the couple of small steps we have taken forward as a team and program versus a good Rutgers."
The Scarlet Knights got on the board early, scoring a goal just three minutes into the game. Delaware had an opportunity to answer back with a penalty corner in the 10th minute, but Ashley Iannuzzi's shot was blocked.Â
Rutgers scored its second goal of the day in the 13th minute on the rebound of a penalty corner shot. Both teams went scoreless the rest of the match, each taking seven shots on the day.Â
Delaware's Lizzie Gaebel was able to hold Rutgers to two goals, as the Scarlet Knights have scored three or more goals in four of their seven games this season. Gaebel had three saves on five shots on goal.Â
"Although our record is not what we want it to be, having played six Top 20 opponents has allowed us to learn a lot about ourselves and this should be very helpful as we prepare to start CAA Conference play in two weeks."
The Blue Hens travel to Philadelphia, Pa., for a road game at Temple on Sunday, Sept. 26 at 1 p.m.
