No. 23 Delaware Returns to Winning Ways with 3-1 Victory at Temple

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The No. 23 Delaware field hockey team (3-6) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 3-1 win at Temple (6-3) Sunday afternoon.Â
"A great and important win for Delaware field hockey!" said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "As a coaching staff we are excited for our team and they have stayed the course and trusted the process in recent weeks. We are getting better and a good example is our performance and discipline in the first and fourth quarters. As in previous games we hurt ourselves in the first and didn't finish it in the fourth, today we did much better."
In the second minute of the game, Kiki Oudshoorn netted her third goal of the season. She received a pass from Morgan Rigual on the ride side of the scoring circle and got a quick shot off to hit the back of the net stick side high.
The second and third quarters went scoreless on both sides. The Owls outshot the Blue Hens 2-0 in the second quarter, but the Blue Hens had a 6-3 advantage in the third quarter.
Temple's Julianne Kopec tied the game early in the fourth quarter making the score 1-1.
Julia Duffhuis answered back with under five minutes remaining in the game, allowing Delaware to take back the lead. She scored on a corner from the top of the scoring circle with assists from Femke Strien and Grace Miller. Duffhuis leads the squad with five goals and 11 points.
With 2:28 left on the clock, Ashlyn Carr slapped in the rebound from a corner attempt to secure the win for the Blue Hens. This marked Carr's first goal of the season and her eighth overall point, which stands second on the team.
Delaware held Temple to just eight shots, three of which were on goal. Lizzie Gaebel had two saves on the day. The Blue Hens had a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners.Â
"Now we are looking forward to open CAA conference play next weekend and take advantage of all our learnings and experiences we gained thanks to a Top-Five strength of non-conference schedule. We have gotten better and the month of October will allow our team to further their growth so we can play our best Delaware hockey in November!"
The Blue Hens travel to Philadelphia, Pa., once again for a road game at Saint Joseph's on Friday at 3 p.m.
