BALTIMORE, Md. – Einar Hardarson, Carlos Fernandez and Zach Golden each scored goals as the Delaware men's soccer team posted an impressive 3-1 road victory over UMBC Tuesday night at the Retriever Soccer Park.
The Blue Hens struck first in the 24th minute when Tiago Santos played a corner kick to Hardarson, who fired a shot into the top right corner of the net for his second goal in as many games.
Taylor Calheira scored off a Ryan Becher feed in the 52nd minute to pull UMBC even, but Delaware answered with a pair of goals to pull away.
In the 56th minute Pedro Barbolla dribbled to the left endline before feeding a pass to Fernandez who scored from close range to put the Blue Hens in front for good. Fernandez now leads UD with three goals this season, while Barbolla picked up his first career assist.
Delaware added an insurance goal in the 70th minute when Golden collected a pass from Justin Ruth and blasted a shot into the top right corner of the cage for his first career goal.
The UD defense would make the lead stand up, as goalkeeper Scott Sampson needed to make just two saves on the night.
Delaware held a slim 11-10 edge in shots, including a 5-3 margin on target.
"I'm thrilled for the group that they got the win," head coach Ian Hennessy said. "We have had multiple season-ending injuries from the start and got news of another earlier today, but these lads rose to the challenge when maybe they could have thrown in the towel. It was an extremely spirited performance, scoring three goals against a good UMBC team in front of a big home crowd. They have shown they are up for the challenge and are already looking forward to another Top 25 team (#22 Hofstra) coming to town this wekend in CAA action."
