NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware volleyball team picked up a pair of wins on the opening day of the Delaware Invitational after defeating NJIT and Fordham in straight sets on Friday.
"I think it was really good for us to get two wins today," head coach Sara Matthews said. "I don't think we were really executing at a high level in the second match or playing very clean, but it was a great sign to see the team grind it out and still get the win. There were some really good individual performances in both matches. I thought Lani was outstanding and Lauryn was really good. There are a lot of positives to take out of today's performances and also room for us to grow. I'm excited that the out of system stuff that we've been working on in practice is translating to our matches and resulting in us getting kills. We are looking forward to playing again tomorrow." Â
MATCH ONE vs. NJIT
Lani Mason led the Blue Hens' attack with a match-best 12 kills to pair with four digs. Kirah Johnson wrapped up the match against the Highlanders with eight kills on a .412 attack percentage to go along with three blocks.
Ezgi Basaranlar posted 23 assists, while Lily Rogers added seven off the bench. Defensively, Katie Turner posted a match-best 15 digs.
MATCH TWO vs. FORDHAM
Mason was again put up a solid performance, tallying 16 kills on 29 attacks. The junior came one dig shy of a double-double, wrapping up the night with nine. Johnson and Savannah Seemans combined for 16 kills after notching eight apiece. Johnson was a force at the net, recording five blocks, while Seemans added 10 digs to her stat line.
Lauryn Richardson was also efficient against the Rams, posting seven kills on 13 attacks.
Basaranlar posted her first double-double of the season with a match-best 33 assists to pair with 11 digs, while Turner logged 13 digs on the night.
