COCKEYSVILLE, Md. – A trio of Blue Hens were able to set personal-best times at the Towson University Invitational as the University of Delaware cross country team opened their 2021 season Saturday morning and placed second overall out of six teams from Baltimore County Agricultural Center in Cockeysville, Md.
The host, Towson, took the top spot among the field of 49 NCAA Division I, III and III runners with a score of 30, while the Blue Hens (33), St. Mary's College of Maryland (104), Morgan State University (119), University of the District of Columbia, Washington D.C. (138) and Coppin State University (141) followed in respective order.
"I was really proud of the team's effort today," said head coach Ryan Waite. "I wanted to give our athletes who won't generally be in our top five the opportunity to have their result count towards the team score, and they fought stride for stride with Towson the entire race. Some of these women haven't run a cross country race in two years because of the pandemic, but you wouldn't know it by watching them fight today."

In her cross country debut, Sarah Kimak followed by finishing the race in 15:42.40 to capture sixth-place while Alicia Lenoir claimed seventh with a career-best time of 15:44.60. Suiting up in the Delaware uniform for the first time were Danielle Eshelman (15:49.10) and Carolyn Coletti (15:50.50), where they took eighth and ninth place, respectively, to round out the top-five scorers.
The Blue & Gold also saw Samantha Side set a personal-best time of 15:52.30 for 11th place, as Marissa Dailey (15:57.40) and Hannah Smalley (16:36.20) crossed the finish line for 12th and 20th place, respectively, in their collegiate debut.
Waite added, "The same group will race at Goldey Beacom in a couple weeks and I'm excited for them to apply what they learned today towards that next opportunity."
Ainsely Jacobs of Towson won the invitational with a time of 14:35.60 as her teammate Casey Walter (15:14.40) and the Blue Hens' Hally placed second and third, respectively.
